Who was Annie Malone and how was she involved with the children’s home?

Annie M. Turnbo Pope Malone (prominent entrepreneur and founder of Poro College) served as the President of the Board of Directors for this organization (first named St. Louis Colored Orphans Home) from 1919 to 1943. In 1946, the home was renamed Annie Malone Children’s Home in honor of the service, dedication and guidance given by Mrs. Malone.

Mrs. Malone was the first African American Millionaire in the United States. She owned the first Rolls Royce in the state of Missouri and in her lifetime helped thousands of women across the country and around the world become independent consultants with the sale and manufacture of her hair care and beauty products. Her philanthropic zeal was legendary, generously contributing to family, educational, community and many social service endeavors.

At the height of her career, Mrs. Malone owned substantial properties in the Chicago area, employed over 100,000 Poro Agents, had one hundred beauty stores, and had amassed holdings estimated at $14 million.
